Coupland, Fisher, & Volkov

Claire Coupland, Ian Fisher, & Sammy Volkov recently crossed paths at the Folk Alliance music conference in Kansas City.  Quick friendships were formed and the three songwriters, respectively from British Columbia, Missouri, and Alberta, cooked up the plan to share their heartfelt songs and humorous stories “in-the-round” this summer on a tour up and down the West Coast of Canada.

Claire Coupland

There is a pureness to Claire's voice that can silence a room.  A moving songwriter and compelling guitarist, Claire combines smooth folk finger picking, jazz influenced progressions and a powerful yet tender delivery. She has been relentlessly touring her new album with 5 tours in 2023 alone, drawing audiences in with warm and personable performances - always with a touch of her “wicked sense of humour” (Rik Emmett). After joining forces with some of LA’s finest musicians (Dawes, Sam Weber), "New Light" presents fresh and spontaneous arrangements with mood filled percussion, slinky guitars, sparkling piano and shades of grunge and California rock. Claire has toured all over Canada and The UK, reached #3 in the national earshot radio charts, garnered song writing nominations, had steady CBC & BBC UK airplay, and rave reviews from music publications around the world who laud her lyricism, deft guitar playing and rich vocals.  Claire Coupland brings a graceful contemporary feel to indie folk music. Ian Fisher

Ian Fisher left his home state of Missouri when he was twenty one to roam the streets of Europe for fifteen years.  His music mixes his rural Midwestern American upbringing with a dark delicacy shaped by his time abroad. Simple, yet emotionally complex, he has the acoustic grit of an early Jeff Tweedy with a sentimental pen ready to strike a’la Townes Van Zandt. Fisher has written nearly two thousand songs while touring extensively through Europe, Africa, and North America.  His many albums have earned him praise in such outlets as Rolling Stone, who calls his music “Half Americana & Half Abbey Road-Worthy Pop”.  Link to Music

Sammy Volkov

Record collecting left Canadian-American Sammy Volkov with a flair for combining old-fashioned melodies with idiosyncratic lyrics. Imagine if Roy Orbison and Townes Van Zandt co-wrote a song - weird - but it works. Sammy’s first single ‘Weather Report’ caressed the ear like an homage to Brill Building songwriters while capturing his cinematic approach to music-making. Sammy’s ‘Be Alright!’ was the first album to debut at #1 on Alberta’s CKUA Top 30 Chart. Within a month, it reached #38 on CKUA’s Top 200 Album Chart for 2022 and debuted at #19 on Earshot’s National Top 50 Chart in Canada. Sammy enjoyed features on CBC, CKUA, and CJSR Radio. He has opened twice for Mariel Buckley, toured all over Canada, and has performed at the Edmonton, Calgary, & Canmore Folk Music Festivals. He is about to record his second solo album with producer Renny Wilson of Faith Healer. Link to Music
